Real science! Real fun!

Nerds For Nature is bioblitzing! And we need your help.

Join us on May 11 as we nerd out with biologists, botanists, and lepidopterists to observe and record the biodiversity of the Bay Area, starting with our kickoff event on May 11 in McLaren Park, San Francisco.

Start time: 12 pm sharp (brief orientation and iNaturalist training session.)

End time: 5 pm

BONUS: Evening moth ID session with renowned moth expert Jerry Powell (he wrote the book on western moths)

What we’ll do

Nature Nerds, scientists, and amateur naturalists will work together to find and identify as many different species as possible within McLaren Park – everything from ants to redwood trees (called a ‘bioblitz’). We’ll break the park up into zones and even encourage some friendly zone-to-zone competition. Bring yourself or a group of friends! We have 300 acres to explore.

We’ll use iNaturalist, a smartphone app, to record and photograph what we see. Check out iNat’s place page to get a sense of all the cool stuff we might see! And we’ll build on this list too!

Sign up at

If you have a smartphone, we also recommend signing up for an iNaturalist account ahead of time. The morning orientation will review how to use the tool.
